It would be interesting to find out the story behind the mannequin - who was the wag who perpetrated this?

  1. I spy a bottle in his pocket. I guess that Geol Survey officers were used to him partaking of 'field medicine'. Murchison cultivated a reputation for applying energy and stamina to his field work - perhaps his feats were supported by the 'medicine'? Charles Lyell wrote home about Murchison imbing some potion whilst on their 1828 tour of Europe "Murchison must have been intended for a strong man, if the sellers
    of drugs had not enlisted him into their service, so that he depends on them for his existence to a frightful extent, yet withal he can get through what would knock up most men who never need the doctor."
