I spy a bottle in his pocket. I guess that Geol Survey officers were used to him partaking of 'field medicine'. Murchison cultivated a reputation for applying energy and stamina to his field work - perhaps his feats were supported by the 'medicine'? Charles Lyell wrote home about Murchison imbing some potion whilst on their 1828 tour of Europe "Murchison must have been intended for a strong man, if the sellers
