What a wonderful picture; different ages, sexes, and backgrounds. How rich life was when people generated their own interests, and interacted with the real world, prior to TV. It is evocative of my younger years;lost in a timeless summers day, totally absorbed in the "now" of fossil hunting in an old Chalk quarry. I could have been alone on Mars. I still have the fine Conulus echinoderm I found that day.
Hi Steve, many thanks for your comment. The GA from its inception had a membership drawn from a wide mix, from amateur to professional, 'ladies' were eligible for membership from the start of the organization in 1858 and there was no lower age limit so children could join in the fun! Excursions and lectures were the mainstay of the organization, the excursions being very frequent e.g for 1912, the GA held a total of twenty-nine excursions. Today of course, there are so just too many competing activities to sustain field excursions at this rate.
